Seasonal Influenza Vaccination 2020

Flu virusIFlu vaccination provides the best protection against an unpredictable virus which infects many people and can cause serious illness and death each year. With the challenges brought by the Covid 19 pandemic it is more important than ever that we have effective plans in place for the 2020/21 flu season to protect those at risk, prevent ill-health and minimise further impact on the NHS and social care.

The seasonal flu vaccination is free and recommended yearly for those most at risk of flu.

This year the groups of patients who are eligible for the vaccination include:

  • all children aged two to ten (but not eleven years or older) on 31 August 2020  - Children aged 2-3 years and older children who are also in a clinical at risk group can be vaccinated at the surgery, other children will be given the vaccine at school.
  • those aged six months to under 65 years in clinical risk groups
  • pregnant women
  • those aged 65 years and over
  • those in long-stay residential care homes
  • carers
  • close contacts of immunocompromised individuals
  • health and social care staff employed by a registered residential care/nursing home, registered domiciliary care provider, or a voluntary managed hospice provider
  • those who were on a register as being at high risk of complication from Covid-19 and their household members.

If you fall into one of the risk groups above please phone 0117 9082360 (after 10am if possible) to book an appointment for your flu vaccination.

There is also a plan that the vaccine will be offered to patients aged 50-64 who are not in one of the above "at-risk" groups.  We are currently awaiting further detail about when, and how, the vaccine will be offered to these patients.  It is likely that this will be offered later in the season after the higher risk patients have been vaccinated.  If you fall into this group please do not try to book an appointment with us just yet.

This year our campaign will be run slightly differently due to the infection control measures we have put in place because of Covid-19.

  • Do not attend the surgery on the day of your appointment if you have a high temperature, a persistent cough or alteration in your sense of taste or smell.  These could be symptoms of Covid-19 and you should visit www.nhs/uk/111 to get tested and find out more about how you need to self-isolate to prevent any spread of potential infection.
  • To ensure the safety of both patients and our staff please ensure you wear a face covering when you come into the building.
  • Arrive promptly at your appointment time, not before, as we do not have facilities for you to wait and there is very restricted seating in the waiting room.
  • We will provide guidance on social distancing whilst in the building, please ensure you comply with this.
  • Please do not bring other family members with you unless this is absolutely necessaryWear clothes which will make it easy for you to expose one of your shoulders. Please start to remove coats and heavy cardigans before you enter the clinical area.

VaccineIf you do not wish to have a flu vaccination this winter, or have already been given the vaccination given by another healthcare provider, please let us know so that we can stop inviting you:

  • Email us a message at beechwoodmedicalpractice@nhs.net
  • Leave a message on our cancellation message facility (0117 9082360, Option 1) detailing your name/address/date of birth and telling us you are declining the flu vaccine this year.
  • Call us on 0117 9082360 and speak to a receptionist

We hope that you will take this opportunity to have the vaccination and that we will hear from you soon.
